Easy dinner rolls: Pan frances

We love dinner rolls, and we also love an easy recipe to make them often.

My mother in law shared this one with me. The new ingredient here –compared with the water rolls from my country, is the milk. When making them, I personally love to use honey and coconut oil instead of sugar and vegetable oil, but both options work really well.

Dinner rolls

Dinner rolls are soft golf size bread that are great to eat as a side at dinner time.

Simple ingredients

Yeast

Water

Oil

Salt

Powdered milk

Honey

Unbleached bread flour

How to make dinner rolls (step by step)

  1. Add yeast and honey to the warm water, stir, and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
  2. Using a stand mixer and a hook attachment, add powdered milk, flour, oil, salt, and yeast mixture. Mix all together for about 8 minutes at medium speed, or until all combined and mostly attached to the hook. Let it rest there for 5 minutes.
  3. Bring dough to a floured area and lightly knead and put it in an oiled container covering with a cloth to proof for one hour. After the proofing is done and it has double in size, bring it back to a floured surface to cut into small pieces to make the rolls. Once you make all of the rolls, place them in oily pan and let them proof again for 30 minutes.
  4. Bake rolls at 350 F for 25 minutes. This will vary depending on the size of your rolls.
  5. Take them out and brush with melted butter and kosher salt (if desired). Enjoy!

How to serve

You can serve this as an appetizer with butter spread, and jam of your choice. You can also have them as a side to eat with the main dish. In El Salvador we usually eat this at breakfast time with refried beans and sour cream as the spreads.

How to store

Store covered at room temperature for two days to conserve freshness. You can freeze them once they are cool up to three months. To defrost, just leave on the counter top or table for about two hours before using them.

Tools

I am using a stand mixed. However, there are other options of bread mixers that will probably work just great. Just watch the video to see the consistency you would want to make sure the proper proofing time and the overall process to make these rolls. In El Salvador, people use their hands to knead, you can imagine all the time and effort to create these.

Notes

  • 1. You can use coconut oil, just melt and cool before adding to the recipe. This option is delicious, I personally love it.
  • 2. You could use liquid milk, but you will need to adjust the amount of flour to get the right consistency, about one more cup of flour.
  • 3. You can proof at room temperature, or in the oven at 95 F
  • 4. You can use regular yeast, but the fast yeast will allow you to skip the 10 minutes waiting for the yeast to rise before adding it to the flour mixture.
